# Setting Up Plex for Your Family: Profiles & Parental Controls

> Learn how to create managed accounts for kids, set content rating restrictions, share libraries, and build a safe family-friendly Plex setup for every household member.

Movie night with the whole family should be effortless — not a scramble to make sure the wrong content isn't one accidental tap away from appearing on your six-year-old's screen. Plex gives you the tools to build a genuinely family-friendly streaming environment: separate profiles for every household member, granular content rating restrictions, PIN-protected access, and individual watch histories that keep everyone's recommendations relevant. This guide walks you through every step of setting up Plex as a household platform your whole family can enjoy safely and independently.

## What You Need Before You Start

  Plex Pass is required to create **managed accounts** — child profiles with parental controls managed by you. If family members are adults with their own Plex accounts, you can share libraries with them for free using Plex's standard sharing features.

## Setting Up Plex Home and Managed Accounts

    Log in to **plex.tv** with your admin account. Navigate to **Account → Plex Home** and click **Enable Plex Home**. This converts your single-user account into a household account that can have multiple members.

  <Step title="Add a managed account for each child">
    In **Account → Plex Home → Manage Members**, click **Add a Managed User**. Enter the child's name (this is the display name they'll see) and optionally upload a profile avatar. Managed accounts don't require an email address or separate Plex account — they exist entirely under your household umbrella.

  <Step title="Set a PIN for the child's profile">
    On the managed account settings page, enable **Require a PIN** and set a four-digit code. This ensures your child can't accidentally (or deliberately) switch to an adult profile without the PIN.

      Set a PIN on your **own admin profile** as well. If your profile doesn't have a PIN and you're logged into Plex on a shared TV, a child can tap your profile icon and access unrestricted content. Protecting every adult profile with a PIN is the only way to guarantee content restrictions hold.

  <Step title="Configure content rating restrictions">
    In the managed account settings, find the **Content Restrictions** section. Set the maximum allowed rating for each content type:

    * **Movies:** G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17
    * **TV Shows:** TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-G, TV-PG, TV-14, TV-MA
    * **Music:** Allow or block explicit tracks

    Content rated above the limit simply won't appear in the child's library view — they can't browse to it, search for it, or play it.

  <Step title="Choose which libraries the managed account can access">
    Still in the managed account settings, expand **Libraries**. Toggle on or off each library section individually. For example, you might give kids access to your **Movies** and **TV Shows** libraries but not your **Home Videos** or adult documentary collection.

    Click **Save Changes**, then switch to the child's profile (you'll need their PIN if you set one). Browse the library and confirm that only age-appropriate content appears. Search for a restricted title to verify it doesn't show up.

## Sharing Libraries with Adult Family Members

Sharing your Plex library with a partner, parent, or sibling who has their own Plex account is straightforward and doesn't require Plex Pass.

    In Plex Web, navigate to **Settings → Users & Sharing → Sharing**. This shows everyone you've already shared with and lets you invite new people.

    Click **Grant Library Access** and enter the email address associated with their Plex account. Choose which libraries they can access (you don't have to share everything), and optionally allow them to download synced content if you have Plex Pass.

    If the family member also has Plex Pass, you can grant them permission to use your server for camera uploads or offline sync. Toggle these options in the sharing settings.

  Shared users watch from **your** server using **their own** Plex account. Their watch history, continue-watching queue, and watchlist are separate from yours — your "Up Next" row stays clean regardless of what they watch.

## Making Plex Family-Friendly on Every Device

    On a shared living room TV (Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV), open the Plex app and set the default profile to your family's most common user. Anyone who picks up the remote and presses play will use that profile.

    In the Plex app's **Settings → Account**, make sure **Show profile switcher on launch** is enabled. This displays a profile picker each time the app opens, so everyone selects their own profile before browsing.

    Install the Plex app on each child's device. Have them sign in to the app using the **Switch User** option and select their managed account. Since managed accounts don't have email addresses or passwords, they'll simply pick their profile from the household list.

    With Plex Pass, any managed account user can download content to a device for offline playback. This is perfect for long car rides — download a few episodes or movies to a tablet before you leave the house.

      Downloads are subject to the same content restrictions as the profile they're downloaded under. A managed account restricted to PG content cannot download an R-rated movie, even if a parent tries to initiate the download from that profile.

## Tips for a Smooth Family Setup

* **Review restrictions quarterly.** As kids get older, their appropriate content rating changes. Revisit the managed account settings every few months and adjust ratings as needed.
* **Use Collections to curate kids' content.** Create Collections like "Family Movie Night Picks" or "Holiday Films" visible only in the kids' library for easy browsing on shared TV time.
* **Label your free ad-supported content.** Plex's built-in free movies and TV shows are also subject to content rating restrictions — kids' profiles automatically filter out mature free content, not just your personal library.
* **Audit the dashboard occasionally.** The Plex Dashboard shows every active stream in your household. A quick check lets you confirm that everyone is watching what they're supposed to on their own profile.
* **Test restrictions from the child's profile.** After any change to a managed account's settings, log into that profile on a test device and search for restricted content to confirm it's properly hidden.
