What Is Plex?

Plex is a two-part ecosystem: a Plex Media Server that runs on your computer or NAS device and organizes your local media files, and Plex apps that connect to that server from virtually any device. Sign In and Link Your Device

Once you’ve installed the app on your TV or streaming stick, open it and choose Sign In. On devices without a keyboard, you’ll see a short code displayed on screen along with the URL plex.tv/link.On your phone or computer, go to plex.tv/link, sign in to your Plex account, and enter the code shown on your TV. Your device will link instantly and drop you straight into the Plex interface.
The linking code expires after a few minutes. If it times out before you enter it, simply refresh the app on your TV to generate a new code.

Explore Free Streaming Content

Even before you connect a personal media server, your Plex app is fully loaded with free content. Navigate to Live TV to browse dozens of live channels, or head to Movies & Shows to find thousands of free, ad-supported titles available on demand.The free tier is genuinely extensive — you’ll find classic films, indie favorites, documentaries, and full TV series without spending a cent. Ads are shown periodically, similar to traditional broadcast TV.

Set Up Your Personal Media Library (Optional)

If you have your own collection of movies, TV shows, or music, this is where Plex really shines. To add a personal library, you need to install Plex Media Server on the computer or device where your files are stored.Download Plex Media Server from plex.tv/media-server-downloads and run the installer. Once it’s running, a setup wizard opens in your browser automatically.Follow the wizard to:
  1. Name your server (e.g., “Home Server” or your name)
  2. Click Add Library
  3. Choose a library type: Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos, or Other Videos
  4. Browse to the folder on your computer where those files are stored
  5. Click Add — Plex will scan the folder, match your files against online databases, and download artwork, descriptions, and ratings automatically
For best results, organize your files before adding them to Plex. Movies should be in their own folder named like Movie Title (Year), and TV shows should be in folders structured as Show Name/Season 01/Show Name - S01E01.mkv. Plex uses these naming conventions to accurately identify your content.

Start Streaming

With your library set up, open any Plex app on any device signed in to your account and you’ll see your personal media alongside the free content. Tap any title to start playing.Plex automatically handles transcoding — converting video formats your device can’t natively play — so you don’t need to worry about file compatibility. Just press play.

Pin your most-used sections to the sidebar for faster navigation. In the web app or on desktop, click More at the bottom of the sidebar, then drag your favorite sections to the top of the list.
